F is for Flower Power

Elmo was a cool cat who was definitely into flower power.

Most cats bring presents to their owners - mice, birds, maybe even a baby rabbit. But Elmo, of  San Jose, made the news a few years back because he gave up little creatures for more inanimate objects.

He progressed from mice to gloves...... yes, gloves! His first trophy was a gardening glove and then he started bringing home latex gloves from a nearby medical center.

"Then one day we woke to magnolia blossom petals strewn throughout the living room. We praised him enormously," said his owner Laurel Beecher, reminiscing about her quirky rescue cat who is sadly no longer with us.

"He brought more. We praised him more. Gradually, there were fewer gloves and mice, and more and more plant pieces."

Elmo then decided the offerings should be fresh tips of young branches of any available trees.

"We praised him profusely and placed the most beautiful ones on the place mat next to his food dish," said Laurel.

He was such a proud cat that he sometimes woke his owners up in the middle of the night to show them his latest trophy.

Gone but never forgotten.

  1. Haha. Bear used to steal anything he could carry in his mouth. It wasn't such a big deal to me - but when my brother visited, it'd get a bit old to have to find his watch, his charging cable, his toothbrush, pens ... anything Bear could get his paws on.

  2. Now, those are some "gifts" that people wouldn't mind getting from their cat.
