I was reading Birgit's blog and she mentioned Sabrina The Teenage Witch. I must confess I was probably a little too old to appreciate it fully when it was on TV but I did remember the wonderfully sassy cat Salem.
It seems I'm not the only one to be a fan of the smart-aleck cat. Lara, from the UK, loved the show when she was teenager.
Her husband Sam said: "My wife Lara had always wanted a black cat. This came from her childhood love of witches. Her favourite TV show growing up was Sabrina the Teenage Witch, and the witch had a talking black cat as a pet.
"We could not believe it when Cats Protection told us that many of the cats in their care are actually black, because many people simply don’t want them. This made Lara really sad."
I wrote about the unpopularity of black cats in my post Black Cats Rule.
Sam and Lara were introduced to Coco at their Cats Protection and fell in love with her straight away.
Speaking as part of Purina and Cats Protection's Unadoptables campaign - which celebrates the fact no cat is unadoptable - Sam said: "Sadly, many of the cats in care are black. Where it was once superstition and the fear of bad luck, a growing trend to why black cats are often overlooked is because apparently, they don’t photograph well for people’s social feeds."
Sam and Lara originally looked into adopting a black kitten for their little girls - but they were just as thrilled when the family found a cat who was a little older. Sam said: "The girls weren’t at all sad that she’s not a kitten, they absolutely love her.
"The first day we took her home, she vanished. We looked everywhere. I couldn’t believe it when we found her in our girls’ room as they are so noisy and manic. In the drawers under their bed, I could just see a little bit of fur snuggled amongst the fancy dress."
If you can't remember much about Salem, here's a little video for you.
And finally... you can't keep a good cat down! This Youtube video (nothing at all to do with the story above) made me laugh.

Oh, my goodness! I totally forgot about Salem!!! He was my absolute favorite character - you know, given that he was the only cat featured in popular media at the time.
ReplyDeleteI loved his sarcasm - it appealed to my sense of humour!
DeleteTalking cats make TV shows great.
ReplyDeleteThey do!
DeleteI was too old for the show, but I watched it because of Salem. I even have a stuffed one that talks. :)
ReplyDeleteA stuffed cat that talks! I want one!
DeleteI loved Salem, didn't see him often, not a big TV person, but he was a real character.
ReplyDeleteHe was - very sassy!
DeleteI saw some Salem clips. He really is awesome. And very much what many felines would be like if they lowered themselves to speak our language.
ReplyDeleteAs for the thing about social media.... I can't even.
How true is that! As for social media, I'm with you...
DeleteOh, I remember this cat! Thanks for the fun flashback!
ReplyDeleteI'd forgotten how funny he was!
DeleteOur mom loved that show! Even though she was probably a little too old to be watching it. Salem was a cool dude.
ReplyDeleteI was too old as well, really, but I still watched a few episodes. Yes, Salem is one cool dude!
ReplyDeleteI never really got into the show, but Salem was the best part. Aren't many shows with cats, that one and Early Edition were the two that I recall. That is just pathetic, almost as much as superstition, that they don't get black cats due to not selfie-y well. Pfffft.
ReplyDeleteWe should start a campaign MORE CATS ON TV! That selfie thing is ridiculous but if anyone is that shallow they probably shouldn't be trusted with a cat - whatever colour it is.
DeleteI found that show annoying, sad to say. While I was too old to enjoy it, worst of all was the obnoxious laugh track. I realized that just now watching a second of that 'best of'. ~sigh~ Thank you for that second video. Awesome footage! Be well, my dear.
