My Cat The Picky Eater

Some cats are really picky eaters.  My cat, though, will happily feast on woodlice, spiders and mice and lap filthy water out of an old container in the garden.

Present her with a bowl of perfectly good cat food and she will look at me as if I am trying to feed her rat poison. Sometimes it's a brand and flavour of food she has been happily tucking into for years. All of a sudden Miss Picky decides she doesn't like it any more.

I can put fresh food in her bowl and she will eat half of it. However, 10 minutes later the remaining half is no longer palatable, apparently. Cue another look that could curdle milk.

Which reminds me. Milk. She happily drank small saucers of milk (the one that's specifically for cats) for the first seven years of her life. Now she won't touch it.

But settle down with some expensive Brie you bought at the farmers' market and there she is at your side batting your arm with her paw as her big amber eyes plead with you. "Just a little nibble. I'd love a little taste. Mmmm, you know cheese is my favourite thing EVER."

She has definite "rules" from which she will not deviate - until she decides to change the rules.

Present rules include never eating any food that's on special offer (how does she KNOW?) even if it's her favourite brand and flavour; having a clean bowl for every meal; never eating the same flavour of food for more than two meals in a row; and demanding to share your fresh food like fish (although she doesn't like fish-flavoured proprietary cat food - go figure), prawns and chicken.

Yet I know that, heaven forbid, if she were forced to fend for herself in the wild she would be happily feral within a fortnight.

Look at this:

  2. Sigh.

I had (have) some diarrhea problems with my cats, and they became extremely picky. I found out that they're more likely to eat when their food isn't on the floor, but on the table. They liked to sit on my table and watching through the window whilst eating.

Surprisingly enough they are now again fine with their normal spot. I was aware of the possibility that they would claim that their food is now always served on the table, but I didn't mind that much. I DO mind about my keyboard and cell though, but this battle never seems to stop.

  5. That's the thing about us cats...we like to keep the humans guessing. :)

  6. I didn't remember that about cats. Interesting their lack of taste senses though. Obviously the answer, just feed them on raw meat.

  7. Picky, like when the young cats will only eat the older cat's special food (the food to help with her health problems). Sigh.

  8. Sounds like you have a very normal cat :) I have 15 cats that change their preferences all the time, some want gravy then I stock up on those cans and no one wants them.

  9. That is so ME! I won’t eat store brand foods. I like my wet food with a little crust on top so I save it for an hour or so. I only like Chinese and Mexican take out people food.

  10. Only 500 taste buds?? I had no idea. We have 4 cats so it gets interesting. The oldest must be on a diet since he is prone to urinary infections and he likes it so we dodged that bullet. Our next cat is so picky I swear she is a super model. Our 3rd cat is Tuna, Tuna, Tuna. Our last cat is fat. We inherited her that way-she eats anything. I caught her eating dog food once.

  11. Hmm… picky eaters. Fortunately, we don't have that problem in our parts. We eat anything!

  13. Your kitty loves to entertain you with her pickiness.
Didn't know about cats having limited taste buds... My mom's cat had FIV and one of the things that kept her entertained for years was her meal buffet... my parent's had to put out at least three different fancy feast flavors and a dry food (even when she had all her teeth removed). She would sit in front of her bowls and decide which flavor she wanted for each meal. I think this variety and decision making helped her live longer. <3

  14. Hey, we kitties have an inherent right to change our mind! In fact, it's mandatory. It's up to you humans to figure out what we want when we want it and if we want it.
